foto's vanTimor

Abels. De gelegenheid was vermoedelijk een verjaardagsfeestje in Kupang.

The Australian branch of the Verheul tree

(Uploaded by Yolande Elliott for my mother Bep Groen-Verheul)
I am a grandchild of Opa Verheul whose third child, Gerrit Verheul, was married to Janna Cornelia van Dieen.
They had 7 children, Arie the eldest grandson then I, the eldest granddaughter and 5 more. I remember a lot from Benthuizen, because I often stayed with Opa en tante Lij and their beautiful dog.  When the dog died we buried her in the garden near the little creek. Everybody in the small village knew me of course because I was the granddaughter of their beloved burgevader. I remember that Oom Arie and tante Jo(Hebly) from  Nederlands Indie (Indonesia)  were coming over for holidays with their 4 children Arie, Hans, Ria and Kees. That was a wonderful time. Always something to do and somebody to play with, we had rides in Opa’s car - that was really special; hardly anybody had a car in those days. We always went by car to the church in Zoetermeer . I loved being there; everything was so nice and so different from home. There were so many of us, you always had to share and sort of fight for the things you wanted. I loved my Opa with his nice grey curly hair.
I reckon he was very handsome. He always called me Hartedief. I was often at their place. My brother Arie was often home-sick and wanted to go home. So I was the only grandchild to get spoiled for a while. Later on Opa and tante Lij moved to Zeist when Opa retired.  Tante Jeanne and Oom Johan were also Indie. In war time I went on an old bike to Zeist to bring food to them which I first collected from the cousins (Oudijks of course) in Waddingsveen and Bleiswijk I think. Anyway that is were I met Herta Denneboom,  she was called Willie then. After the war time I went to Opa and tante Lijtje to look after them.  Lijtje was smitten with arthritis and was always in pain. She could hardly walk anymore, after the war everything was up side down and wrong. I did not know what I wanted to do with my life so that was a good solution; to help Opa and tante Lij out. I stayed in Zeist for more than 3 years.
I remember all the walks I had with Kees in de woods of Heidestein, we always went there for a swim. Sometimes Frank Goldberg was with us as well. After a couple of years Oom Arie came home from the Japanese prisoner of war camp. Later the Valewinks arrived; I can still see Marjolijn very white and very skinny coming out of that bus, having a lapdoll in her arms. That was a lovely time in Zeist when the Valewinks were there, because it could be very quiet with only old people to look after. Now there was always laughter and fun with Geert Jan and Marjolijn.  Opa always gave me a cigarette after the meal, heel gezellig, but that is how I started to smoke, not knowing how bad it was for our health.
In due time Oom Johan and tante Jeanne moved to Den Haag and I was lost when they were gone, I wanted to move also, eventually I went to Amsterdam to the school for Family Carer.
After the study I went to work in Eindhoven and later on Huizen. I wanted to become a social worker and had to study very hard in the night time. Before I finished my study, I had other plans and immigrated to Australia in 1955 and was married in 1956.
The 10th of March was our wedding day, in one way not an easy day, no family or friends from Holland to celebrate with us. Luckily Kees had a sister here with four girls who were very excited about their favourite uncle getting married. We moved into a self contained flat, that was very nice, Kees was a real handyman and could make things out of nothing, that is how we could save up for a block of land. I had to give up my dream of becoming a social worker because of the language and the laws were completely different. So we took all sorts of jobs and worked very hard.
In 1958 we became proud parents, our beautiful daughter Yolande was born, at that time I was a bit homesick, because I wanted to show her to my Mum and Dad. 2 Years later we had a son Gary, named after our 2 fathers (Gerrit).  When he was 15 months old we moved into our new house up in the foothills overlooking Adelaide and St Vincent Gulf. A very nice view. 2 more sons; Harold and Colin were born. We were a happy family. Had our ups and downs, never became rich, but life was good, we had lots of friends all from Dutch back ground. The children went to school and grew up too quick. Yolande became a teacher, the boys did not want to study, so they went to work after high school. Colin went to trade school and became a builder, he built a beautiful house for his family. Yolande & Gavin have 3 daughters; Gary & Marie have twin daughters and a son. Harold  &  Allison 2 boys and Colin the youngest has 1 boy , his wife,  Linda, is expecting their 2nd baby in June. So this is the Australian branch of the family, my Dad always said, Go and multiply. See the results! My husband (Kees) died on 27th May 2004, We had a good life  in Adelaide, no regrets that we left Holland, but it is still our home country. We liked to visit and have done so plenty of times.
